The Kiwi Farms internet forum is actively working to restore its operations following a security breach by hackers, prompted by its recent blockage from internet infrastructure firm Cloudflare due to concerns about potentially harmful language. Known for organizing harassment campaigns, particularly directed at women and the LGBTQ community, Kiwi Farms disclosed the breach in a blog post, advising users to assume the compromise of their passwords and email addresses.
In an updated post on Monday, Kiwi Farms acknowledged the hack, stating, “The forum was hacked. I need to reformat and reinstall everything. I need to completely evaluate my security from the top down.” The online forum revealed that Cloudflare had previously provided protection against such hacks, a service that was compromised in the recent breach.
Cloudflare’s CEO, Matthew Prince, had announced earlier in the month that the company had blocked access to Kiwi Farms content through its infrastructure, which offers web hosting services along with cybersecurity. Prince described this decision as “extraordinary” and acknowledged the discomfort associated with it, given Cloudflare’s role as an internet infrastructure provider. He emphasized that the escalation of rhetoric and specific, targeted threats on the Kiwi Farms site had led to the unprecedented decision, citing an immediate threat to human life that surpassed any seen from Kiwi Farms or other customers before.
